ERD “Kick the Tragedy” Poet T-Shirt — Black

The name. The figure. The instruction.

Black heavyweight cotton. The front carries three things, arranged loosely across the surface as though placed rather than designed: the brand name broken into three lines at the top, a hand-drawn figure on the right, and a two-part phrase at the bottom. None of them crowd each other. Each one reads on its own terms.

The name first, in wide-tracked sans-serif capital letters, one word per line:

ENFANTS
RICHES
DEPRIMES

Printed without accent marks — DEPRIMES instead of DÉPRIMÉS — which strips the French orthography back to its phonetic skeleton and makes the word read harder, flatter, more like a verdict than a name. Three lines force three pauses. You read each word separately before you read them together.

The figure: a small, thin human form, hand-drawn in white line on black. Pointed hat or tangled hair obscuring the face. Long coat. A thin rod or cane held loosely at the side. Head down, body turned, the posture of someone walking away from something — or into something — without looking up. This is the poet ERD returns to across multiple pieces: marginal, solitary, aesthetically ruined, still moving.

At the bottom, split across two positions:

Not avoid the tragedy. Not survive the tragedy. Kick it. The verb is physical, blunt, slightly absurd — the kind of instruction that only makes sense as a posture rather than a plan. The poet figure above it is not kicking anything. He is walking through it. The text says one thing; the image does another. ERD puts them on the same shirt and does not resolve the difference.
